Ashley Gonzalez was born in Artemisa, Cuba, in 2000. From the very beginning, she was surrounded by family, love, and the rich natural landscapes of her homeland. Before her first birthday, her mother won the Visa Lottery, allowing her parents to start a new life in the United States, leaving behind their large family. Gonzalez grew up in the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, where she found comfort and inspiration in both art and nature. After graduating high school in 2019, Gonzalez was accepted into Florida International University, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2023. In 2022, she was admitted into the Academy of Portrait & Figurative Art, further refining her skills in representational art. She continued her studies at FIU, earning her Master’s in Art Education in 2024. Through her art, Gonzalez seeks to evoke nostalgia, childhood innocence, and the emotional bonds that shape us, often drawing from nature as both subject and symbol.
I make art for various reasons, out of simple curiosity and to ground myself. Throughout my art I explore the soft phenomena of my imagination. I love to romanticize life for myself and that is seen through my work when I make human figures seem uncannily beautiful. I enjoy using a variety of materials that range from pencil, watercolor, gouache, and oil paints. I love all different types of art, mostly figurative art. I am influenced by artists such as Frida Kahlo and Alphonse Mucha. I am very inspired by 18th century Rococo painters and the Art Nouveau movement. My work explores the cosmic idea that our loved ones are always around, love is always around. I want to create pieces that feel like intimate portals to dreams. When drawing and painting figures, making them seem almost perfect with no type of proof that the being has gone through stress, distracts me from the hardships of the world, in a way it is an escape.
